Hugh Bawtree
Hugh has 20+ years experience in software development, 2 degrees in Computer Science and continues his life-long learning of software development tools and techniques. Hugh is the founder and President of Bawtree Software Contracting. He recognized in 2004 that there is a big difference between common practises and the best practises of software development. Bawtree Software was formed to apply best practises, such as Agile development, to high-tech projects.
Education
Hugh has the following education:
- Batchelor of Science (University of Victoria) 1984.
- Master of Science (Simon Fraser University) 1991.
- Jolt Judge for the Jolt Awards for many years. This position involves evaluating the best software development tools and books of the previous year. It enables Hugh to stay on top of the latest tools and techniques.
Experience
Hugh has a passion for elegant, high-tech software. He has worked on a range of interesting projects:
- Telecommunications - monitoring and controlling long distance telephone networks.
- Email systems - corporate-wide email, when email systems were new.
- Parking Lot meter - automated parking attendant which accepted credit card, coin and bill payments.
- DNA pattern matching - identify and match DNA gene strings. Does approximate matching which is much harder than exact matching.
- Magazine articles - software development articles on developer tools and development processes.
- Automated sawmill equipment - equipment which decides how to cut the wood into lumber based on the shape of the raw wood and the desired lumber products.
- Sawmill monitoring system - this system gathers information from all the sawmill machine centers and consolidates it for sawmill-wide reporting.

Hugh is also a:
- Jolt Judge(http://www.joltawards.com/): this is an annual evaluation of the best software development tools and books from the last year. Hugh's participation helps him keep up-to-date on the latest tools and techniques.
- Father of two teenage daughters and a step-daughter. All smart, attractive and generally wonderful!
- Musician - sings and plays bagpipes - but not at the same time.
- Political junkie - enjoys following the ups and downs of national and international politics.
- Railway buff - reads about the history of Canadian Railway history and watches the trains from his office window!
